Privacy Policy

Privacy Notice for National Koala Monitoring Program apps (the Apps):

Your personal information is protected by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act) and CSIRO will handle your information in accordance with this Act and the National Health & Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007, updated 2018).

Your personal information including your email address, login details, information related to your koala sighting including your location (latitude and longitude measurements) and the time/date (as determined by your phone) is being collected by CSIRO for the purposes of conducting the National Koala Monitoring Program and facilitating your use of the App, and related scientific research.

CSIRO may also collect your system information including your Internet Protocol (IP) or MAC address, device number, geolocation data and log/usage data. However, this information will not be used for any purpose outside of facilitating your access and use of the App.

PLEASE NOTE: Only images of koalas and their surrounding environment should be uploaded through the App. Please do not upload any images of a person including of yourself or of another individual.

CSIRO may disclose your information to third parties, including Google, for the purposes outlined above.

PLEASE NOTE: Your download of the App via Apple or Google's application (app) stores, and your personal information collected by Apple or Google as part of this process, is covered by your personal agreement with Apple and Google's respective Terms & Conditions and privacy policies only, and not CSIRO's. Apple and Google use servers based in the United States (US) and other data centres around the world. This means that your user information may be transferred outside of Australia to servers based in the US, Singapore and other countries. By downloading the App via Apple or Google's app stores, you consent to the disclosure of your information to Apple or Google servers located outside of Australia. You also acknowledge that the information will not be subject to the requirements of the Privacy Act. Your koala sighting data is hosted on a Google server in an Australian data centre.

Please do not provide information about any other individual via the App without their consent.

Information collected via the App will be de-identified and/or aggregated by CSIRO before it is published/presented on a publicly available website, and in reports and scientific papers.

By using these Apps:

You agree to the collection, use and disclosure of your personal information in the ways described in this privacy statement.
You agree to the transfer of your personal information to Apple or Google servers located both inside and outside of Australia in the ways described in this privacy statement. You acknowledge that information stored outside of Australia will not be subject to the requirements of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
You understand that your download of these apps via Apple or Google's application stores will be governed by Apple and Google's respective Terms & Conditions and privacy policies only, and not by CSIRO's. You acknowledge that Apple or Google's collection, use and disclosure of your personal information will not be subject to the requirements of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
